I love painting snow– especially in a place where it gets warm enough after a storm for me as a painter to be comfortable!  In the Zuni Mountains of New Mexico, even in early January, it doesn’t take long for things to warm up once the clouds part.  This piece, however, was painted before that happened.  Flurries were still spinning down and dropping into my palette, making for some crusty manuevering.

This snow didn’t last long.  By the next day, much of this had melted.

Mohave Point is one of my favorite locations to paint within Grand Canyon National Park.  As an invited artist for many years at the prestigious plein air painting event, the Celebration of Art, I’ve been able to get to many beautiful spots that are off the beaten track.  Although you can get to this viewpoint via shuttle bus, I have the advantage of going by private car with a permit, which makes it all the easier to take my painting gear. I feel very blessed to be able to do this.

This was painted just on the west side of Mohave Point, toward sundown.  It features the Colorado River, snaking off into the blue distance.
