Paint the Southwest Workshops

Join Michael for a plein air painting workshop in the Sedona, Arizona, area!  New locations in New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and California coming soon!

October – April: Sedona and Verde Valley Area, Arizona

Join Michael in Sedona’s beautiful Red Rock Country! Sedona and the surrounding Verde River Valley area offer a wealth of material for the painter like nowhere else: stunning vistas of red rock formations, quiet creeks edged with cottonwood and sycamores, mysterious canyons plus much more. Michael has been painting the area for over 10 years and will share with you some of his favorite locations. For details, schedules and to register for one of these painting workshops in Arizona, visit the Paint Sedona site at www.PaintSedona.com

In this workshop, you’ll get lots of personal attention. Michael limits the workshop size to typically no more than four students. Workshops last four days (Tuesday-Friday) from 9-1 each day. You will work with Michael in the morning in the studio with critiques and lectures followed by demonstrations and student work. Michael will make sure you have plenty of time to paint under his experienced eye. In the afternoons, you may either paint on your own (he will gladly give you location suggestions) or explore the area’s many restaurants, shops and galleries. The week may also include a visit to his private studio.

Michael offers three different types of workshops: all-level STUDIO or OUTDOOR (plein air, basic painting instruction, intermediate-advanced OUTDOOR  (more advanced plein air painting instruction or retreats), and special topic OUTDOOR painting (advanced color, advanced design, hiking to paint). There are also some one-day workshops. He will also gladly create a customized workshop for a group. For full details and to check openings, please visit www.PaintSedona.com. (Schedule is subject to change up until first sign-up for a week.)

What to Expect

In the all-level workshops, Michael focuses on fundamentals for painting outdoors – how to begin, how to proceed and how to finish. He’ll show you how to capture the moment quickly and effectively but without sacrificing mood and magic. The workshop will include demonstrations but also plenty of time for student work plus group critiques. Advanced workshops are customized more to students’ needs and can also include mentoring. Whatever the workshop, Michael gives personal attention at the easel, complete with helpful tips and suggestions. You can expect an intense but very rewarding time!
