Canyon Abstract Series
In the spring and summer of 2020, to help ease the tension I was feeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, I hiked daily into the canyon behind my studio to sketch in gouache. I sketched rocks and canyon walls, each time marveling at the beauty I found there in light and shadow and in cracks and spalling cliffs. I filled an entire sketchbook with these studies, and I called this Volume 1 of the “Pandemic Sketchbooks.” Later in the summer, when the monsoon season came to New Mexico, I headed to the studio to turn some of these studies into finished paintings. The Canyon Abstract Series is the result.
