I’m offering a one-day studio landscape painting workshop for the El Morro Area Arts Council on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 10 to 3 with a lunch break. This will be a studio workshop, not plein air. We will work in the studio from photographs.
All media are welcome, but I will be demonstrating in oil and pastel. In this workshop, we won’t focus on any medium in particular (although I will help you with whatever you bring) but instead will be learning the fundamentals of landscape painting. Topics covered:
- Choosing a scene
- Composing the scene
- Handling values for effective design
- Handling color for effective harmony
- Putting a sense of distance into the scene
- How to finish
Materials needed:
- Your photographs which can be prints or on a tablet or phone (preferably not close-ups but wider views although not necessarily vistas; and I will also bring photos if you prefer to work from mine)
- Medium of your choice (please bring one that will allow you to work in color, so not pencil or charcoal, but oil, watercolor, pastel, gouache or acrylic; if oil, please do not bring turpentine but only odorless mineral spirits or use water-soluble oils)
- Papers or panels to work on + scraps of same for value and color experiments
- Paper towels for clean up
- Easel if you like (although we will have tables to work on)
- A sketchbook or newsprint pad + charcoal stick or charcoal pencil
- LUNCH! (EMAAC will provide snacks and coffee, water)
This workshop will be limited to 10 people.
I will require you to sign up for this. The workshop is FREE, but there is a suggested donation of $20 to EMAAC.
To sign up, contact me here.
The workshop will be held at the Old School Gallery at 4009 Ice Caves Rd, Ramah, NM 87321.
