Paint with a Guide! / Downeast Maine, Canadian Maritimes

Ready to explore my favorite painting spots in Downeast Maine and the Canadian Maritimes? For over 20 years, I’ve painted these stunning coastal landscapes and led plein air workshops and retreats, and I’m eager to share what I consider the best of the Bold Coast—crashing surf and tall cliffs, quiet coves and mossy bogs, fog-shrouded spruce forests and historic waterfronts.

I’d love to guide you through this unforgettable terrain. My summer studio on Campobello Island, Canada—just across the bridge from Lubec, Maine—is just minutes from dozens of breathtaking locations. Whether you come solo or with a friend, I’ll help you find subjects that spark your creativity. I’m happy to demo and share techniques anytime—always in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere.

🏞️ What to Know Before You Sign Up

1. Mobility Requirements
This experience involves walking on uneven terrain while carrying your own gear. If mobility is a concern, this may not be the right fit. While painting from your car is an option, the most inspiring views often require a short walk. Seating and tables aren’t guaranteed, so bring a portable chair or table if needed. Sturdy shoes are a must—no sandals, please.

2. Painting Experience
You don’t need to be a pro, but some painting experience—especially outdoors—will make your time far more enjoyable. This program is for artists who want to deepen their plein air practice.

3. Transportation
You’ll need your own vehicle. For insurance reasons, I can’t offer rides to participants.

4. Traveling with Paints

  • Oil Paints: Safe to pack in checked luggage or ship ahead. Avoid bringing mediums or solvents like Liquin or Turpenoid in your luggage—they’re flammable and must be shipped separately.
  • Pastels: Carry them in your hand luggage in a secure, easy-to-open container.
  • Other Media: All mediums are welcome! I’ll be working in oil, pastel, or gouache with ink brush.

Special Note for Acrylic Painters:
Acrylics dry quickly outdoors. To manage this, consider using a Sta-Wet Palette, a retarder, and a spray mister. Or try slower-drying acrylics like Golden Open or Atelier Interactive.
